how to make a fruit fly trap
It’s the season of yummy fruit, baskets of peaches, delicious berries, which also means it’s fruit fly season. I’m not sure how they get in your kitchen but when they do if you don’t get rid of them fast they can multiply and multiply. Last year I came up with this simple trap that works like a charm. First create a cone out of paper with a small hole at the end of the cone. Make the cone so that it fits the width of a tall glass tightly and is long enough so that it’s not touching the bottom of the glass. Then use a piece of tape to hold the cone in place. Now find something to put in the bottom of the glass to entice the fruit flies. The first time I tried honey, thinking it was sweet and should work, but it didn’t. As I was trying to think of what to use, my smart child suggested fruit - since they are fruit flies - well that makes sense. So in this case I used the tops of strawberries, I’ve also used a peach pit (with some flesh still on it), and a piece of banana peel would work too, or any bit of fruit really. You don’t need much, just a few strawberry tops can catch a lot. Now wait, the flies will fly down the cone and then get trapped and not be able to get back up the hole in the cone.
In less then a day you will catch more flies then you think would. After you have a bunch of flies, bring the glass outside, close the door and release the fruit flies. Now you can put the cone back on and try to catch more. If your fruit if getting gross, you can replace with new stuff, but I’m sure the flies don’t care.
And there you go, an easy way to get rid of fruit flies. Good luck.
another great idea! we put a glug of apple cider vinegar in a glass, cover it with saran and poke holes in it. within minutes the fruit flies dive in then can’t get it. i take maniacal pleasure in killing them!
That’s a great idea too. And I agree it’s awesome seeing all the flies you catch
This actually works. My glass is full of fruit flies and my fruit is not. Thanks.
