Post from the past: How to make a shell necklace
I originally posted this back in 2007 when I had made lots of these shell necklaces. Before kids were born we went on a trip with friends to Panama (you have to sing it like Van Halen) and they had tons of beautiful shells. They were everywhere and we collected more then we probably were legally allowed to but we made it past customs and I had a bag full of shell that I needed to do something with.
How to … make shell necklaces
Supplies needed
-Shells
-Drill and a small drill bit
-Beads
-Jewelry fasteners, crimp beads, etc.
-Wire, thread, or fishing line
First drill a hole in the top of the shell – it’s not easy but take it slow and pick a part on the shell that’s not too thick. It takes awhile but you can get through.
Then you need a ring to put through the shell. You can either buy one or make one. To make one, get a piece of wire and put through the shell, then put small seed beads on the wire. Then close the wire at the back – so the shell front is hiding it and you have a ring of beads. I tried rings I bought but I think the beaded ring looks better because it hides the hole you drilled (which is never perfect).
Now make your necklace with whatever beads you have. You can also just attach the shell to chain or rope if you want.
I’ve made a few variations with different beads and ribbons - they are all pretty. One year I think I gave everyone I know a necklace for their birthday.
I should check and see if I have any shells left - I’m sure I could come up with something else to make with them.
