Resizing A T-Shirt
Have you ever gotten an one size fits all tee that doesn’t fit anyone - at least no female. This summer at Lilo’s sports camp she got a size L Youth tee that was just way too big for her. She really wanted to wear it next day at camp so I had to work my sewing magic on it to make it fit.
1. Find a tee you like the fit of. Lie in top of your larger tee, lining up the neckline.
2. Then trace around the body adding about 1/2 around for seam allowance and 1″ for hem. I used white paper making chalk - but you could use regular chalk, or a crayon.
3. To trace around the armhole carefully pull the sleeve up and trace around the curve.
4. Now you have the body traced out.
5. To trace the sleeves, match up the hem and centre fold of both sleeves and carefully pull the t-shirt inside the sleeve to get the curve. The front curve of the sleeve is different from the back but I find the difference isn’t too much that I just do them the same and it fits pretty good.
6. Now cut it all out and sew it up. I serged the sleeves in first and then the side seam. For the hem I used a twin needle which gives a very finished look of a double needle coverstitch. Then to finish it up, trim and tac (sew) down the seam at the sleeve hem.
And here you go, in about 1/2 hour you have a new fitted tee.
Doesn’t it look much better and she’s much happier too
