So happy to share this awesome, fun and practical project I did for my girl’s room. In her room she doesn’t have room for a side table so she had no where to put her books, tissue or water so they were always just lying on her floor beside her bed. So I made this hanging organizer to use a a headboard to store all her necessities.

The fabric I used was the splatter canvas that she and her friends made last year for her splatter art birthday party. I was thinking of making a headboard with it originally but we bought her a bunk bed for her so there was no headboard. But it was perfect for this project - it’s a heavy sturdy fabric and adds the colour and pattern like a headboard.

To make this organizer I first measured the space where I wanted it. I finished all the edges first, including a 3 inch hem at the top for the grommets. I then spaced out how many grommets I wanted and put those on following the instructions on the package.

To make the pockets I grabbed a few different sized books that we have to make a few different sized pockets. I took the book and laid it on the fabric and traced it out - then added a 2 inch boarder around 3 sides. The top edge is actually a bit shorter then the book to make it easier to remove the books from the pocket. Now you need to sew the corners of the pocket - you do this by folding 2 sides together to make a triangle. Sew across the corner on your traced line, then trim the extra. The top edge is hemmed with a 1/2″ turn hem and then press the other 3 edges in 1/4″. Now figure out where on the organizer you want the pocket and I drew out the outline on the backing fabric since I couldn’t pin through my fabrics. Then using the guideline you drew, place the pocket on and sew the folded edges on to the backing with an edge stitch. Repeat with the other sized pockets.

To make pockets for other things you can follow similar steps. I wanted a pocket for her water so I measured the cup out including the width to make sure the pocket was deep enough. The tissue pocket was a bit trickier but not too bad. Trace out the box and measure the sides and add 1/2″ for seam allowance for 3 of the sides. Add 1/2″ hem allowance at top - here you want the pocket to cover all of the tissue box. I made this pattern on paper first and then transferred to the fabric. Now you need to figure out where the tissue opening is. I overlapped the opening to make it easier to finish the edges. I finished the tissue opening edges with bias tape first and then sewed the overlapped pieces together at the top and bottom. Then I sewed it up and on like the other pockets.

This headboard is the perfect thing to keep all her stuff neat and organized and within hands reach when she needs them. Plus it looks super fun with this great fabric.
