Family Bike Ride

My husband will soon begin a new position in a city an hour north of Toronto, so in less than 2 months we will be leaving Toronto. I’m excited and nervous about the move, and the big changes that are surely to come in our life. We’ve really enjoyed living in Toronto - but we’re ready for a change…

Being only an hour away, we know that we’ll be back to Toronto often to see friends, shop and just visit. But we also know that there a bunch of things and place that we won’t get around to doing and seeing when we do come back to town. So we’ve decided to make a “Bucket-List” of things we want to see and do before we leave. This isn’t necessarily a list of our favourite places and things in Toronto - like I said, many of those we’ll come back to in the future. This is the smaller, more intimate or special places that I’d love to think we’ll do again - but probably won’t get a chance to. Some favourite little restaurants and bars, or places for family picnics or bike rides.

To kick off the Bucket List, last weekend we went to one of our favourite spots for a family bike ride – the Leslie Street Spit.

The Leslie Street Spit - also known as Tommy Thompson Park - is a 5K peninsula that acts as a breaker in the water of Lake Ontario; it is a dumping area for construction building materials and “fill” - and was primarily formed from the earth removed to build Toronto’s subways over 50 years ago. In the decades since, a natural habitat has grown on the fill that was dumped, and now it’s a beautiful combination of ponds, trees, and grasses - with a shore line of worn-down bricks. While it still functions as a dumping place for clean construction fill during the day, it’s open in the evenings and weekends to the public for walking and biking. And on a warm sunny day, boy is it every popular!

One of the super cool things about the Spit is all the sculptures that people have built with the discarded construction materials. The kids had fun making “fairy houses” with all the junk.

It was a gorgeous sunny day and the water and sky was so pretty and blue.

It was amazing to see what people had made.

Here they had some new bricks that had been recently dumped.

And the Toronto skyline in the distance. While we’re excited for the future, we’ll sure miss this view.
