Olympics are coming - Olympics are coming
Our family loves the Olympics. We always seem to get caught up in the excitement every 2 years (summer and winter). This year were are looking forward to watching our Canadian hockey team - men’s and women’s - plus all the other cool winter sports.
With the Olympics starting in 16 days I’m reminded of all the fun we had last Olympics, including making this fun little necklace. I was inspired while watching the 2012 games and seeing similar looking necklaces on the athletes.
So to make your own Olympic ring necklace here’s what you need: 5 silver rings, adhesive foil tape, coated chain, crimping beads, necklace clasp, pilers and scissors. The adhesive foil tape is used for sealing the joints on air ducts, and is available at most hardware and home supply stores. It’s NOT traditional duct tape, which would be too thick – foil tape is much thinner, much like aluminum foil.
I cut the foil tape in thin strips, and these to join the rings together into an Olympic formation. It was a little finicky, since the foil tapes sticks to itself very easily, but after a couple of attempts it worked. Once the tape was wrapped around the rings, I used the tip of a pencil to smooth it down, especially on the inside of the rings. I also used my fingernail to work it into the grooves between the rings.
I fasten my new charm to the chain with a crimp bead on the outer ring of either side, and then added a clasp and ring to finish the necklace.
It’s a little fragile so be careful with it but it should last for the 2 weeks of the games. Zoomed in close up like the picture above, you can see the imperfections – but from a normal distance it looks great. While they don’t last for long, and certainly aren’t perfect – I love simple DIY jewelry to celebrate little things like the Olympics!
Anyone else excited about the Olympics?
