Mummy, Mummy, Mummy
Mummy, Mummy, Mummy - no it’s not your kids calling you, it’s me making mummies. For Lilo’s Halloween birthday party we all made mummies. I found this great tutorial on Family Chic that showed how to make these bendable mummies that were so cute I had to try them out.
First you start by making the body form with wire. I used some 20 gauge (or something) wire that I had kicking around. The original tutorial used thicker coated wire but I like to use what I have. I decided for the party it would be easier if I made the body forms for each girl instead of having them make them, saves time and frustration. And I ripped 1/2″ stripes of muslin - I just snipped the edge of the muslin fabric and ripped the stripe off. It’s so much faster and leaves neat frayed edges.
I gave each girl a body form and some muslin stripes and they started wrapping the muslin around the form. We started at the head and then went down an arm and wrap on the way back and across to the other arm. Then down the body, adding a few layers to add thickness there for a belly. Then down each leg and back up. If you need to add another piece just overlap the ends and they should stay in place.
This craft is a little tricky, I wouldn’t do it for younger then 8 as it was ok for this group of girls but my younger daughter (5 1/2) was struggling. I took each mummy at the end and used a glue gun to secure loose ends and fix up toes and hands (they can be tricky).
The girls were all proud of their little mummies and were making them dance around.
Then they loved decorating the mini coffins with jewels and stickers. I found these coffins at the dollar store (Dollarama) and had to pick them up. They were just nature wood when we got them but we painted them all black to save time and messy paint at the party. The jewels and stickers were enough fun for the girls. The mummies were the perfect size to use the coffins as their beds. And everyone had a great time putting their personal touches to their creations.
